This error is a bug in the Qt window toolkit on Mac that ChimeraX uses for its user interface. It appears to be a new problem introduced by macOS 26 (Tahoe). It has been reported on Macs with external displays connected and with no external display connected, and possibly happens when waking the computer from sleep. We have no way to fix this. The Qt window toolkit is a massive open source project much bigger than ChimeraX and I think we will have to wait for a new Qt version to resolve the problem. We have started release candidates of the next ChimeraX (version 1.11) due out in December which has a newer Qt version 6.9.2, but we have seen the same error in that Qt version. Your bug report says you have two external Dell displays so possibly this HDMI cable work-around can help you until Qt is fixed. Another possiblity is that an older Qt version such as the one in ChimeraX 1.9 might avoid this Qt bug.

That reporter said the crash is completely reproducible waking the computer from sleep with an external Dell display connected by usbc to display port cable, but they cannot reproduce it when the display is connected by an HDMI cable. This may have something to do with how fast the computer wakes from sleep.
