If forced to the side, it does nuke the window.

Despite the fact that I can tell from measuring various widths that docking a window on the side will nuke the graphics window, there is nothing I can do about it beforehand, which is what I was looking for. However, after the problematic widget is docked (but before it is shown) I can resize its width down to fit into the column of tools and all is well.

Seems to be moot now. The alignment opens as floating. When dropped on the right side, the graphics window retains its size.
